Arizona's warm deserts attract visitors who seek to escape from winter's chilling grip. For fishermen and water sports enthusiasts, the lowland lakes offer year-round opportunity to spend days camping lakeside. Not just a desert, Arizona offers five climate zones dotted with lakes. Visitors enjoy the natural bounty Arizona has to offer, from fall foliage to springtime blooms, when camping at one of the state's many lakeside facilities.

Beat Winter Cold

Head to Arizona's West Coast to escape winter's chill. Three man-made reservoirs on the Colorado River offer lakeside camping for RVs and tents, along with amenities such as restaurants, stores and hot showers. Lake Mead offers 154 dry sites at Boulder Beach, with nearby Lake Mead RV Village (lakemeadrvvillage.com) offering full hookups and amenities including cable TV and Wi-Fi. Lake Mohave boasts three marinas along its length, where campers enjoy full hookups and rent boats to explore the lake. Lake Havasu State Park hosts 45 non-electric sites with shower facilities. Daytime temperatures along the coast hover in the 60s and 70s, dipping down to the 40s on the coldest nights.

Wildflowers and Water

A trip to the low desert lakes yields a stunning array of wildflowers and cactus blooms from March through mid-May. Head out the Apache Trail into the Superstition Mountains for a string of lakes populated with plenty of springtime color. Canyon Lake Marina (canyonlakemarina.com) offers 22 RV campsites with water and electric and an additional six dry RV spots. Nineteen dirt tent sites are also available, with nearby hot showers and restrooms. Apache Lake Marina (apachelake.com) offers lakeside views with all hookups including cable TV. A dispersed camping area at the Burnt Corral boat launch offers dry camping with restrooms and potable water. RVs over 40 feet in length are not suitable for the tight mountain turns of the Apache Trail.

Cool Piney Lakes

When summer's heat grows oppressive, head up to the high country lakes. Tall pines and aspen sway in cool breezes blowing off the lakes. With an elevation of over 7,000 feet, Woods Canyon Lake is a popular place to camp in the summer. Daytime temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s, while nights can dip down into the 60s. Campsites are a bit rustic with potable water, no electrical hookups and pit toilets. Wildflowers abound from late spring through autumn, and fairly level trails along the lake allow for easy viewing. Campgrounds are managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Sites can be reserved online.

Autumn Foliage

Perched 9,000 feet above sea level in Arizona's White Mountains, Big Lake unfolds spectacular autumn foliage. Aspens glow bright yellow, contrasting with surrounding coniferous forests. Bugling elk and yodeling turkey are common autumn sounds from the hills surrounding the lake. The newest campground, Apache Trout, offers full hookups for RVs up to 82 feet in length, along with tent sites and hot showers. Groups up to 100 can be accommodated here. The remaining campgrounds offer non-electric sites, with three of the campgrounds for tents only. Waterside sites are available, and boats can be rented from the local store so campers can view autumn foliage from a different perspective.
